Companion tickets currently ignore availability limits. We would like to be able to sell e.g. a ticket to a gala that also issues a separate companion ticket for the film following the reception, and also separately sell tickets to either event. But if the film is nearly sold out (99/100), but the gala isn't sold out, buying a bunch of tickets including companion tickets will bypass the capacity limit and oversell the film.
